Picture this… I’m lounging on a sofa in the private living room in my husband’s godfather’s home in Atlanta, watching a Netflix series, post-vacation chaos behind me (yes, the infamous UPS luggage saga from my X thread – stolen bags and all). My boys are having a special moment with their grand godfather, laughing loudly in repeated bursts over… I don’t know what. Meanwhile, I’m half-present, half-lost in mental clutter, plotting my next coaching session after the episode I was watching elapsed.

Then my younger son comes over to share an exciting realisation with me. I hear him… but do I listen? Not quite. Until I paused, halting all the mind-runs to really listen. Right there, his spark ignited mine and totally changed the trajectory of the conversation, connecting us deeper. That’s the magic of active listening – It doesn’t just fix conversations; it ignites connections, awakens genius, dissolves old “me-first” patterns, and rewires you for deeper impact.

As a Self-ReEngineering and Communication Coach, I teach this all the time: Communication is 75% of our daily reality, but none of it works without “listening”. And yet, so many people speak without hearing, respond without understanding, and react without reflecting. The truth is, active listening accounts for nearly 40 – 50% of effective communication. It’s the bridge between intention and interpretation – the one skill that unlocks clarity, creativity, and connection.

Why Active Listening is Your Genius Hack

Active listening isn’t passive. It’s powerful.

It helps you:

  • Build empathy (the core of meaningful communication)
  • Uncover hidden opportunities (goal alignment)
  • Deepen trust (foundation of Self-ReEngineering)
  • Retain more information (research shows good listeners retain up to 25% more)

Imagine the difference in your next pitch, negotiation, or family conversation.

Here Are 4 Actionable Steps to Listen Like a Genius

  1. Prime Your Pause Button: Before replying, breathe. Ask:
  • “What is my intent with this response?”
  • “What kind of feedback do I want from what I’m about to say?”

This stops autopilot and invites empathy.

  1. Echo for Clarity: Paraphrase or check understanding:
  • “So the challenge here is…”
  • “Are you saying…?”

This helps both sides gain insight – and makes the other person feel heard.

  1. Probe With Curiosity: Swap advice for questions:
  • “What does this really mean for you?”
  • “How are you feeling about this?”
  • “How can I best support you?”

Curiosity unlocks genius-level breakthroughs.

  1. Reflect and Release: After the conversation, journal – “What genius did I activate through/with my communication today?” Tracking your wins builds momentum and sharpens your skills.

Your Call to Genius: Start Small, Shine Big

Listen, friend, you’re not just hearing words. You’re unlocking worlds.

That sofa moment in Atlanta reminded me that blurry mental starts can lead to eureka finishes – when we ‘LISTEN FIRST’.
